Out in the cold woods of Abiquiu, NM was a little puppy lost and alone who was found by some kind soul on a movie set. A sibling of mine, who's heart is large, decided to take the rascal in. With long hours on set and little time to care for the pup, my brother gave me the task (or shall i say gift?) of being Auntie Rebekah. It has been some time since I have had to be responsible for a living creature. The first week was hairy and stressful but I must mention there is nothing quite like loving something. Who would ever have thought i would be in bed by 8p.m. and up at 5a.m.? Or would organize my plans around HIS schedule?
Luke (as in Cool Hand Luke) gives me kisses every morning and a bark to get me up and at it. The long walks we now take are rather different than those i took on my own. Rather than brainstorming business and art with a rampant pace I now walk with awareness to my surroundings, explore on a whim and have a watchful eye out for where Luke might be. Lately we have had the pleasure of hearing and seeing the geese migrating. Endless arrow formation flocks honking their way South, following the Rio Grande. Here is a picture of Luke along that amazing tributary.
As my health returns I have to hand it to Luke for keeping me at a REAL pace, for bringing me around to SEEING the present, and for getting me out of myself and into loving something else. Through him i also have realized what a great family and community i am surrounded by. People and dogs who stop to play on our walks, or people who help with his schedule, or those tried and true animal lovers who offer so much valuable information and time. The Kundera quote below sums it up well mee thinks.
If you live in ABQ i have to recommend Wags and Whiskers in Corrales (10700 Corrales Rd N.W. Albuquerque NM 87114 Phone: 505 898-8626)...the ladies there have really been a huge help in educating the Potter clan on their latest addition.
"Dogs are our link to paradise. They don't know evil or jealousy or discontent. To sit with a dog on a hillside on a glorious afternoon is to be back in Eden, where doing nothing was not boring--it was peace."
- Milan Kundera
